Tourism for Development Fund

In March 2023, the 5th UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) took place in Doha, which is held every ten years. During the conference, the TUI Care Foundation and the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) announced a new initiative to promote sustainable tourism development in the least developed countries. Through the new “Tourism for Development Fund,” the TUI Care Foundation will provide 10 million euros by 2030 to support development projects in LDCs with the assistance of the UNWTO.

According to the United Nations, sustainable tourism has the potential to become a key driver of development in many LDCs. With its extensive links to a wide range of stakeholders and activities, the sector can contribute to economic growth, social development, intercultural dialogue, and significantly to environmental and wildlife conservation. Through the “Tourism for Development Fund,” the TUI Care Foundation will support development projects in the areas of education, local entrepreneurship, support for artisans and creatives, as well as the protection of natural habitats.

The Fund

In line with the TUI Care Foundation’s strategy, the projects will focus in particular on dual vocational training in disadvantaged communities, sustainable agriculture, the protection of endangered species, marine conservation, the empowerment of local entrepreneurs, creatives and artisans, as well as the promotion of sustainable investments. Following a careful assessment of local needs, support will go to projects aimed at strengthening the skills of local communities, improving their livelihoods, protecting nature, and creating market-oriented solutions that benefit destinations. Target countries include, for example, Cambodia, Laos, Mozambique, Senegal, The Gambia, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. The UNWTO will support the Tourism for Development Fund through its global network, mobilize additional donors, strengthen coordination with LDC member states and international organizations, and develop formats that highlight the potential of sustainable tourism in LDCs.
