TUI Academy Jamaica
In Montego Bay, the primary economic driver is the thriving tourism and hospitality sector, and the Jamaican government anticipates that an additional 45,000 workers will be needed over the next years to meet its employment requirements. Yet this growth contrasts sharply with the reality in many communities, where social challenges, gender inequality and limited vocational skills remain significant barriers.
TUI Academy Jamaica focuses on skills training and job creation, with a specific emphasis on empowering women. By offering a dynamic and engaging learning environment, the project equips trainees with the skills, knowledge and confidence to secure meaningful employment and build sustainable livelihoods. It aims to enhance the employment prospects of young Jamaicans in the Montego Bay area, disrupt the cycle of poverty, alleviate social inequalities, and transform the lives of Western Jamaica residents.
As the Jamaican tourism and hospitality industry grows and new job opportunities are continuously created, Montego Bay faces a pronounced shortage of skilled labour to fill these roles.
At the same time, a lack of training, certification and the psychosocial support needed to transition into meaningful careers means that a significant number of young people struggle with unemployment, underemployment and the limited opportunities for upward mobility.
After a successful first phase during 2024-2025, TUI Academy Jamaica is continuing to tackle this challenge through its partnership with the Institute of Vocational Education and Skills Training Limited (INVEST). The second phase of the project offers targeted vocational training and certification to 150 young people over the age of 17. 70% of the students are women who live in or near Montego Bay.
TUI Academy Jamaica’s curriculum is meticulously designed to align with the specific needs of the industry, ensuring that students gain the essential skills and expertise they need to work in the evolving hospitality and tourism sector. Training is provided in high-demand areas such as housekeeping, tour guiding, food and beverage service and food preparation as well as hotel property maintenance. TUI e-Academy training modules are also incorporated into the curriculum, offering students the opportunity to gain additional knowledge through tailor-made and sector-specific online training.
The course offers students classroom and practical training and builds partnerships with local hotels and hospitality stakeholders to provide valuable work experience and internships. This collaborative approach significantly enhances the students’ prospects for successful integration into the job market upon graduation.
A life skills and personal development training component is integral to the project, equipping participants with soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, stress management, and emotional intelligence. Additionally, the inclusion of a mentorship programme cultivates leadership skills so that the students can be positive influences amongst their peers, ultimately contributing to greater inclusivity and improved life skills. For the most vulnerable students and their families dealing with emotional or psychological challenges, the programme provides additional support through targeted counselling, focused on building resilience, coping mechanisms, and promoting overall well-being. In addition, at least 50 students benefit from assistance with the social support documentation required for employment.
To support graduates to secure jobs after the training, TUI Academy Jamaica incorporates job readiness sessions and job fairs. These events serve as a platform to connect trainees with industry businesses, enhancing their employability and paving the way for successful transitions into the workforce. Around 70% of programme graduates are expected to secure a job within six months of graduating, Additionally, the project supports entrepreneurship by providing training and resources to those students who would like to start their own small business in the tourism sector.
